The Beneish M-score is a statistical screen that flags aggressive or potentially manipulated earnings from eight accounting ratios. These companies score above the −1.78 threshold, meaning their numbers look more like the historical profile of manipulators than of clean reporters. That is not proof of anything — high scores have plenty of innocent explanations (acquisitions, fast growth, accounting changes) — but it’s a reason to read the filings more carefully. Financials and insurers are excluded (the model doesn’t apply).
